Bialystok – the Heart of Podlaskie

Bialystok is the capital and largest city of the Podlaskie Voivodeship in north-eastern Poland. With a population of just under 300,000, the city lies picturesquely on the banks of the Biała River and is often described as a true gem of the North Podlaskie Lowland. Its unique location near the borders of Belarus, Lithuania, and Ukraine has shaped the multicultural character of not only Bialystok itself but also the entire region.

Today, Bialystok serves as a vibrant hub of culture, education, and tourism. It attracts visitors with its relaxing atmosphere, beautiful green spaces, and impressive monuments. The most famous landmark is the Branicki Palace, surrounded by one of the best-preserved Baroque gardens in Poland. This 17th-century residence, built for the Branicki family, is considered one of the finest examples of magnate architecture from the Saxon era. Because of its grandeur and elegance, it is often called the “Versailles of the North”, “Versailles of Podlaskie”, or simply the “Polish Versailles.”

Nature lovers will also find plenty to enjoy. Bialystok lies in close proximity to three national parks – Białowieża Forest, Narew National Park, and Biebrza National Park – all of which offer exceptional opportunities for hiking, kayaking, birdwatching, and discovering unspoiled wilderness. This makes the city a perfect starting point for anyone who wishes to combine sightseeing with active outdoor recreation.
